YOU NEVER FORGET YOUR FIRST
Whenever it’s July or August, I am always reminded of that special day in my life where I styled my first ever event: Xavi’s Cat in the Hat Birthday Party. It was magical (at least to me) because that was the party that got the ball rolling into what is now known as Party Magic. I am forever grateful to Tin Dychiao (of Manila Fashion Observer fame) for the trust!
So what’s new with Party Magic? Lots, apparently. One party we did that I am currently crushing on is this:
Sab and Sam’s Descendants Birthday Bash.
A BIG THANK YOU to Toni of Happy Folks Studio for these amazing pictures!
EVIL IS THE NEW GOOD WITH THE DESCENDANTS
Sab and Sam flanked by the evil gang: Mal, Evie, Carlos, and Jay.
When I met with my client, Guita, and she proposed the theme Descendants, I had only one thought in mind: What in the world is Descendants?
After some research (and watching TV):
Descendants is a TV show about a story of outcasts: sons and daughters of famous Disney villains, Mal (daughter of Maleficent), Evie (daughter of The Evil Queen), Carlos (son of Cruella de Vil) and Jay (son of Jafar), trying to fit into this perfect, “goody” kingdom of Auradon, headed by Queen Aurora and King Beast.
THE WONDER TWINS
When Sab and Sam first saw the decors of their party, they exclaimed:
“Mommy, it’s so dark.
I love it.”
Definitely not the typical response you’d hear from two little girls! Maybe these scenes from the party had something to do with it:
The forbidden fruit (another masterpiece by Tazzy Cakes, thank you Cat and J!) is tantalizingly displayed on the cake.
The Descendants’ famous slogan Long Live Evil, plastered on the walls of the photo-op.
The silhouette of Maleficient casting a chilling shadow over the centerpiece arrangement. Check out those apples nestled within the floral arrangement!
I think the Descendants story is a fascinating one and resonates with Sab and Sam for a reason: Descendants is a story about square pegs trying to fit in round holes, about true individuality and uniqueness, about iconoclasm. And in that way, it shows how Sab and Sam are special, too. This makes me truly excited for what Sab and Sam will eventually show to the world when they come of age!
THE GAZEBO: A DIFFERENT WAY TO BLOW THE CAKE
The gazebo in the middle of the function room at One Shang. A new way to blow the cake!
George Bernard Shaw once famously said,
“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man”
Whenever I feel a lack of ideas, I read this quote and feel nourished. Being a creative is a tough, tough job (you should see what goes on in my head 24/7), but the end result of such creativity is so satisfying.
Here’s an example of being “unreasonable” – Why put the cake on the stage? Why not place it in a sort of “gazebo” in the middle of the venue, and have everyone surround the family while singing happy birthday? This is exactly what we did:
Sab and Sam’s wonderfully constructed cake, by Tazzy Cakes
Over time, my wish is that I can introduce other different ways of celebrating parties.
THE PHOTO OP: A SCENE STRAIGHT FROM THE ISLE OF THE LOST
Earlier, I showed you that scene of the photo-op where brick walls were plastered with the evil slogan, Long Live Evil. This was actually part of a larger scene where I try to depict the Isle of the Lost. Being outcasts, all the Disney villains (and consequently their sons and daughters) were banished to the Isle. It is a place of dust, grime and reeked with overall neglect:
An overused cart in the slums of Isle of the Lost, filled with various spell books and other trinkets
Similar to the modern day slums, the Isle of the Lost is filled with various posters and lost and found ads.
More posters plastering a street post
Maleficent’s grimoire and wand.
Various potions and essences; must-haves for any respectable witch!
THE DESSERT: A MALEFICENT DISPLAY OF SWEETS
Enter the dark forest and take a bite from these forbidden sweets!
I also love how the dessert spread turned out: it looks so dark and evil! Hint: take a look at the mirror in the middle, where a creepy hand is offering the apple.
Can anybody say, mirror, mirror on the wall?
Here are some more delectable sweets from the selection:
THE AMAZING MAAN DID IT AGAIN
As much as I enjoyed styling this party, I also believe in giving credit where credit is due. I was introduced to Guita my client through Maan of Party Starters, who was generous enough with the referral. Thank you, Maan!
If any of you have a party to plan and feel overwhelmed, don’t even think twice. Get Maan. You won’t regret it. I’ll talk more about her and coordination in general in an upcoming blog post!
SAB AND SAM’S DESPICABLY DESCENDANT PARTY: A REAL BLAST!
In the end, the only truly important question was: did Sab and Sam have a great time? Maybe these photos offer a clue:
The evil crew getting it on with some devious dance number!
The Descendants crew really getting the crowd riled up
Sab and Sam leads the way in this performance!
A most fantastic party for the wonder twins, Sab and Sam! Wishing you a most wonderful celebration!
Love,
Michelle
May i know the name of the group who acted as the evil crew in this party? Thanks
